13 mins (assuming that doesnt include the writing of the lead out
track and finishing of the CD) would suggest a speed more akin to 4-6x
(which is about all I'd expect in PIO-0 anyway)

Having parallel read/write enabled is a much better option :)

Well...have you looked at your settings :) Your CD copy wasn't an on
the fly ISO Image, which your HD backup would be. The default setting
for on the fly image creation is 1 (meaning 1x). Given your CD copy
was going a helluva lot faster, its not suprising your backup took
longer to write. (although 78MB at single speed should still only have
taken about 12 mins to completely write and fix - 8mins 40 to write
the data, and 3 mins to fix the cd :) )
